This spring, volunteers from Beyond Brokerage had the opportunity to work on a truly heartwarming project that highlights the power of friendship, resilience, and the impact of collective efforts. Through the inspiring story of Helen and her family, we witnessed the transformative effect of compassion and support. Jayme, a Beyond Brokerage team member, has developed close relationships with individuals in the Ethiopian community through years of volunteering and mentorship. Initially, Jayme’s family extended their support to refugees who faced incredible challenges and had limited resources upon arriving in the United States.

They taught them computer skills, shared American traditions, and provided a welcoming face during their difficult transition. Over time, the mentorship evolved into a deep and genuine friendship, with Jayme’s family even adopting children from Ethiopia. In return, the Ethiopian community became instrumental in helping Jayme’s family navigate their new culture and traditions. Jayme has always been inspired by the Ethiopian community’s extraordinary resilience. Despite enduring persecution in their home countries and being relocated with minimal possessions, these individuals never made excuses or played the victim. Instead, they worked tirelessly, sending money home to support their families and saving every penny to build a brighter future for the next generation.

This spring, a significant event unfolded within one of the Ethiopian families Jayme had grown close to. Helen, a remarkable woman who had been essentially a single mother, was expecting her second child. While her husband had recently joined her in the United States, he faced the challenge of language barriers and unemployment. Helen, working as a CNA, needed to take time off for the birth, which added financial strain to their situation. Proud and reluctant to ask for help, they found themselves in a precarious position. Fortunately, the NorthPoint Foundation, upon hearing of Helen’s story, sprang into action to offer their support. Recognizing the family’s needs, they purchased essential items, including a crib and other supplies for the new baby.

Moreover, they leveraged their extensive network to connect Helen’s husband with a well-paying job that offered benefits and accommodation for his language learning process. This timely assistance ensured that the family could focus on adjusting to their new life and building a solid foundation in America. With the compassionate intervention of the NorthPoint Foundation and the unwavering support from their community, Helen’s family is now adjusting to being a family of four. They are filled with hope, enthusiasm, and gratitude as they embark on their journey towards achieving the American dream.

This heartwarming story reminds us of the power of connection, empathy, and collective action in transforming lives and creating a stronger, more inclusive society. The story of Helen and her family serves as a testament to the incredible impact that can be achieved when individuals, organizations, and communities come together to uplift and empower one another. Beyond Brokerage team members said they were honored to have played a small part in this inspiring journey and remain committed to fostering meaningful connections, supporting those in need, and making a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve. Together, we can build bridges and create a brighter future for all.
